Erectile Dysfunction, also known as impotence, is the total inability to
achieve erection or the inability to maintain erection for a sufficient
period of time adequate for a man’s sexual needs. The incidence increases
with age, it is treatable, and it is not an inevitable consequence of aging.
It usually leads to relationship problems and diminished self-esteem when
not treated.
It is usually caused by any disease which causes damage to the nerves,
arteries, or smooth muscle. Examples of diseases that can cause this
condition are multiple sclerosis, atherosclerosis, vascular disease,
neurologic disease, kidney disease, and diabetes which is the most common
cause. It can also be caused by chronic alcoholism, as a side effect of
medicines (antihypertensives, antihistamines, antidepressants, appetite
suppressants, and tranquilizers), and surgery for cancers located in the
prostate or in the bladder.
There are plenty of available oral medications for treatment to add to
psychotheraphy and/or behavior modification. Use of vacuum devices or
surgery are reserved for those who do not respond to oral treatment. Please
visit your doctor for more questions regarding this condition."
