BPH is defined as enlargement of the prostate causing constriction of the
urethra leading to problems of urination. Its actual cause is unknown. The
likelihood of developing this condition increases with age. Although it has
similar symtoms with prostate cancer, it does not lead to prostate cancer.
Signs and Symptoms:
frequent urination
incomplete emptying of the bladder
weak stream
difficulty in starting to pass urine
straining
strong and sudden urge to urinate
pain when passing urine
The treatment is based on the severity of symptoms. Oral medication can be
given to mild cases. If oral medication is ineffective then surgery is
advised. Lifestyle modification is also needed together with yearly
examination to monitor progression of symptoms.
A diet low in fat and high in fibers can help prevent the development of
this condition. For those who already have BPH, the following care tips can
help alleviate symptoms:
Urinate whenever you have the chance
Avoid drinking large amount of fluid in one setting
Regularly perform pelvic strengthening exercises
Reduce stress
Avoid intake of decongestants or antihistamines
Avoid alcohol and caffeine
