Handheld Resources for Family Physicians
This web page is intended to provide links to selective web resources, link lists, and software related to the use of handheld computers in family medicine. The page was originally developed to support a research project in the Lyseum Northwestern University Medical Informatics, but the resources outlined below should be useful for anyone with an interest in the use of handheld computing in medicine. If you have suggestions for additions or changes, please send them to Rodolfo T. Rafael,M.D., email to rtrafaelmd@gmail.com

Medical content for handhelds
Beginning in 2002, Gerstein Science Information Centre librarians will review selected medical content that is available from major vendors. The links below represent some of the most popular handheld downloads for health and medicine.
Reference books
5 Minute Clinical Consult (5MCC)
This is the handheld version of the print title Griffith’s Five Minute Clinical Consult. It is compatible with both Palm OS and PocketPC operating systems. The 5MCC is licensed to several vendors for production in handheld format. The most popular handheld version is produced by Skyscape, which links the 5MCC to other related handheld content.
Drug information
In May 2002 Jason Weshler produced an excellent summary chart of handheld drug databases. (Adobe Acrobat required)
ePocrates, Inc. Rx™ 4.0
This popular database of drug information is free. It is available only in Palm OS format. In exchange for free use of the product, ePocrates collects usage information from individual users during the product syncing process and shares that information with its business partners, who may then send you information about drug products based on how you use ePocrates. Before you decide to use ePocrates, read the Privacy Policy carefully. It is the library’s opinion that content which does not protect the privacy of its users would not be supported.
Projects at the University of Toronto
Department of Family & Community Medicine PDA Homepage
The Department is undertaking a research project, led by Dr. Risa Freeman, which will track and assess the use of an electronic patient record ("elog") by clinical clerks in their third year of study at the University. The elog form has been developed and is available for download by students to their palmtop devices. In addition, students will have optional access to key medical information lookup tools on their palmtops (e.g. drug interactions, disease profiles) along with medical tools and calculators.

Bell University Labs
Bell University Labs supports several projects related to handheld use in medicine. More information at http://bul.med.utoronto.ca
Handheld Geriatrics Project
The Geripalm Project is a graduate research project looking at the implementation and evaluation of Handhelds with content oriented towards geriatricians and family physicians in rural populations who deal regularly with elderly patients. Over the course of 6 months participants will be provided with a handheld device and asked to complete various on-line surveys and interviews related to their use of the equipment and comfort with it.

Keeping up to date on handheld use in medicine
