This is a condition characterized by widespread pain in muscles, tendons,
and ligaments accompanied by fatigue which occurs even after enough sleep.
There are tender points distributed in the body such as in the back of the
head, upper back and neck, elbows, upper chest, knees, and hips. There are
other accompanying symptoms which vary depending on physical activity,
stress level, or weather condition. These include:
Headache
Irritable bowel syndrome - with symptoms of diarrhea or constipation and
abdominal pain
Restless leg syndrome - the legs are uncomfortable when in sitting or lying
position hence there is a need for the patient to move around
Increased sensitivity to noise, odors, temperature, bright light , etc.
Anxiety and Depression
Pelvic pain
Temporomandibular joint disorder
Risk factors:
Sex - women
Positive Family history
Age - early and middle adulthood
The cause is unknown and there is no known complication. Treatment includes
use of analgesics, muscle relaxants, and anti depressants. These oral
medications together with lifestyle modification such as regular exercise,
enough rest and sleep and eating a well balanced diet help improve the
condition.
