Epididymis is a tubular structure which lies on the posterior surface of the
testicle. It functions in the transport, maturation, and storage of the
sperm cells coming from the testicles. When it is infected or inflammed the
condition is called Epididymitis. Epididymitis is caused by spread of
bacteria from the bladder or urethra. Bacteria may come from instrumentation
or use of indwelling catheter. Straining is not a contributory factor in
having the condition.
Acute epididymitis has more severe symptoms. There can be scrotal pain
and swelling which may be mild or severe. The affected individual may have
inability to walk because of the pain. The infection can spread to the other
testicle. Other symptoms include fever and chills, pain during urination,
frequency, and urgency, and urethral discharge. If untreated it may lead to
chronic epididymitis with pain as the only symptom.
This condition is treated with the use of antibiotics and anti-inlammatory
drugs. Ice packs may be applied to the affected area to help alleviate the
symptoms. Use of scrotal support and bed rest help improve the condition.
