Clinical Question:
Are certain attitudes and views different between patients who do and do not respond well to a diabetes care intervention?

Bottom Line:
This is an interesting study that helps in our understanding of what it's like to be a diabetic and should make us more open to the signals from diabetics that they are ready to 'get serious' about their disease.

Reference:
O'Connor PJ, Crabtree BF, Yanoshik MA. Differences between diabetic patients who do and do not respond to a diabetes care intervention: A qualitative analysis. Fam Med 1997;29:424−8.

Study Design:
Qualitative

Synopsis:
The goals of this qualitative study were to determine how patients' views of their diabetes change over time, to see how these views are related to changes in glycemic control, and to see how the patients' views regarding their medical provider change over time. There were two interesting outcomes. First, patients experience a sudden 'conversion reaction' in which they suddenly become more aware of the threat of diabetes to their health. Second, they tended to leave their family physician and seek specialist care when this conversion occurred because their FP did not pick up on their attitude change.
