HS is a disease affecting the apocrine glands. It is seen where apocrine glands are located such as in the groin, anal area, and armpits. It is also seen in areas where the skin rub together such as under the breast, between the buttocks, and inner thighs especially in obese individuals. It is characterized by red, painful lesions containing pus which drain when the lesion break open and usually leads to scarring. Tunnels under the skin also develop. Some of the lumps grow under the skin and may become hard, tender, enlarge, and become infected. The condition worsens with time and obesity, hormonal changes, stress, genetics, excessive perspiration, and cigarette smoking contribute to its development and progression. It is believed that blockage of the openings of hair follicles and oil glands contribute to the development of this condition. Although no cure is still available, early diagnosis and prompt treatment help in the prognosis of the condition and prevent eruption of new lesions. Giving of antibiotics for the infection, pain relievers, and corticosteroids improve the condition. Surgery is often done for those with severe and persistent lesions. Surgery is done to remove the pus and drain the lesion. It is also done to remove the affected skin and replace with new one (skin grafting) and to uncover tunnels to improve healing. Surgery does not prevent occurrence of this condition to other areas of the body. |
